Comparatives and Superlatives

En inglés cuando comparamos dos cosas usamos los adjetivos y sus tres grados: positivo, comparativo y superlativo. Aquí tienes algunos ejemplos.

Grados de los Adjetivos

Los adjetivos tienen tres grados de comparación.
Grado positivo, grado comparativo, grado superlativo:

Ejm:

John is tall, but Bill is taller than John.

John es alto pero Bill es más alto que John.

Jack is very tall. He is the tallest man in the team.

Jack es muy alto. Él es el hombre más alto del equipo.

COMPARATIVES AND SUPERLATIVES

Los comparativos se utilizan justamente para comparar una misma cualidad o característica en dos sustantivos. Por ejemplo, en la frase "a small shirt" (una camisa pequeña), small es un adjetivo. Para comparar este objeto con otro, se usa el adjetivo comparativo, "a smaller shirt" (una camisa más pequeña). Para formar el comparativo, se deben seguir las siguientes reglas:

· Se agrega al adjetivo "er" o "r", si ya termina en "e". small - smaller ; large - larger

· Si la palabra termina en vocal + consonante, se duplica la consonante. big - bigger

· Si termina en "y" se cambia por "ier". happy - happier

Cuando el adjetivo tiene al menos dos sílabas, el comparativo se forma usando "more" delante.

Expensive - more expensive careful - more careful.

Para comparar dos objetos en una oración, se agrega "than". This shirt is smaller than that shirt. Esta camisa es más pequeña que aquella camisa. Los superlativos sirven para referirse a sustantivos que son los únicos que presentan una cualidad que los diferencia del resto. Como vimos, en la frase "a small shirt" (una camisa pequeña), small es un adjetivo. Si todas las demás camisas son grandes, se puede comparar usando el superlativo "the smallest shirt" (la camisa más pequeña). Siempre se agrega "the" delante. Para formar el superlativo, se deben seguir las siguientes reglas:

· Se agrega al adjetivo "est" o "st", si ya termina en "e". small - the smallest; large - the largest

· Si la palabra termina en vocal + consonante, se duplica la consonante. big - the biggest

· Si termina en "y" se cambia por "iest". happy - the happiest

Cuando el adjetivo tiene al menos dos sílabas, el superlativo se forma usando las palabras "the most" delante. Expensive - the most expensive careful - the most careful

Existen ciertos adjetivos con comparativos y superlativos irregulares. La única forma de aprenderlos es memorizarlos.

Reescribe las frases utilizando el comparativo del adjetivo entre paréntesis

El comparativo y el superlativo de los adjetivos en contexto

Escoge el adjetivo que mejor complete las siguientes frases. Ponlo en la forma de comparativo o superlativo según el contexto:

Big, confortable, expensive, fast, friendly, Funny, heavy, interesting, long, narrow.

en las estructuras comparativas podemos sustituir uno de los términos de la comparación mediante pronombres (“The book on the table is more interesting than THAT on the shelf”) o verbos auxiliares (“He travels more than I DO”). Estas sustituciones nos permiten ser más concisos sin perder la información que queremos transmitir.

En el caso de los pronombres, se suelen utilizar “that” para sustituir un sustantivo singular (“My house is bigger than THAT of my brother”) y “those” para un sustantivo plural (“My students this year work harder than those of last year”).

En el caso de los verbos auxiliares, nos tenemos que guiar por la forma del verbo que sustituimos. Por ejemplo, si se trata de un verbo en presente, el auxiliar será “do” o “does” (“She sings better than I do”). Si se trata de un verbo en past simple, el auxiliar es “did” (“He played better than I did”). Si, por ejemplo, se trata de un verbo en present perfect, el auxiliar será “have” o “has” (“I have been to Paris more often than my sister has”).

Aunque more y most se utilizan sobretodo como marcas del comparativo y respectivamente del superlativo de los adjetivos, también tienen otros valores. Por ejemplo, los dos pueden ser adverbios: I have been sleeping more these days/ Having a good breakfas is what I like the most.

Most puede ser también un pronombre en construcciones como Most of the students in my class do their homework.

Os propongo familiarizaros con estas construcciones en el siguiente ejercicio. Completad los huecos con more o most.
